Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc. is the only nationally accredited, state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving Broward County. Our mission is to provide victims of domestic violence with safe shelter, crisis intervention and resources, and to educate the community in order to Stop Abuse For Everyone (SAFE) through Intervention, Education and Advocacy. We strive to accomplish this mission by offering services that include 24-hour crisis intervention through our hotline and emergency shelter, counseling and support for victims and their children at various locations throughout Broward County, as well as, education and professional trainings on domestic violence and related topics. Women In Distress currently operates a 62 bed emergency shelter with plans to expand to 100 beds in the winter of 2010, an outreach center (Jim & Jan Moran Family Center), and a thrift store (Blooming Sales). Women In Distress' programs and services are provided free of charge to families needing our services. Donations Contributions to Women In Distress provide a valuable source of support that impacts every aspect of the mission of Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc. Women In Distress shelters more than 400 women and children each year and serves an additional 700+ for outreach services at our Jim and Jan Moran Family Center in Fort Lauderdale. The Ann Storck Center is dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities. Annually, the Center serves over 300 children and adults with physical and mental disabilities by focusing on discovering abilities and building independence. Through a multitude of award winning and highly acclaimed programs and services, we foster learning, self-worth and independence for our students, residents and participants as well as their families and caregivers. The Developmental Training Program (DTP) provides individualized services for nearly 100 adults with severe and multiple disabilities. Activities focus on the likes, preferences and needs of each participant and are intended to support each participation in daily, meaningful, and valued routines. The Multiple Learning Experience consists of sensory engagement, self-advocacy, self-help and daily living skills development, self-expression, and micro-enterprise opportunities. DTP is in need of the following items:
Developmental Training Micro-Enterprise Program: Participants are provided with training in a variety of areas which may include running the cash register, taking inventory, pricing items, stocking shelves, counting total sales, shopping for items to sell, and greeting and assisting customers. These training opportunities help Participants learn the practical value of money, increase self-esteem and build on their existing strengths. The Ann Storck Center is home to approximately 100 children and adults who are multiply disabled. Residents live in one of three houses on our main Fort Lauderdale campus, three homes at our Pembroke Pines Cluster, and four homes in neighborhoods across Fort Lauderdale and Plantation. Each home is staffed by quality, caring staff who provide for the diverse needs of our residents while providing a safe, comfortable, appropriate home environment. In 2010, the Florida AIDS Walk will recruit participants statewide to raise awareness that nearly 125,000 Floridians are living with HIV/AIDS. Proceeds will benefit the beneficiaries for this year including the following, AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Broward House, SunServe, Children’s Diagnostic and Treatment Center, and the Pride Center at Equality Park. Funds raised by Florida AIDS Walk will support the expansion of free HIV testing and prevention education in Florida’s Broward and Miami Dade counties, as well as healthcare for HIV-positive individuals throughout the state. Florida AIDS Walk is produced by Event 360 for AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to HIV/AIDS prevention, education, accessible healthcare, research and patient advocacy. In Florida, AHF currently serves more than 15,000 people living with HIV/AIDS.
